How did the Declaration of Independence fail to deliver its promises to all people?
The Declaration of Independence back in 1776 was the best document in its time due to the fact that it defined what the colonial people wanted from King George. Thomas Jefferson's quote in the Declaration of Independence was the one that stood out the most. This quote was the central point in the document, because he established the people's rights. This would include the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This was the strong point in the declaration. Another strong point in the declaration that made it stand out from anything else was it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish government, and to institute new government, when that government becomes destructive. This was exactly what the colonists did successfully to their British rulers.
The Declaration of Independence, however, did fail to deliver its promises to the colonists because it did promise all of these new rights, but this only applied to a certain percentage of all people. The only people that had these new established rights were white, protestant men. This left out women and people of any other race or religion. In the famous Thomas Jefferson quote about rights it did say all men, not including women, receive all of these rights, however only certain men received rights instead of all men. This brings up the topic of slaves, even though they were considered property back then, they were still people, therefore the declaration failed to deliver its promises to all people inhabiting the colonies.
