The conclusive ruling of the Safford vs. Redding case was that the defendant was acquitted and neither side was viewed as a winner. Although this decision can be justified, the defendant should have been dealt more extenuating circumstances in the verdict. Not only was it inappropriate for Savanna to be carrying weapons and pills on her person in school, it was nonetheless illegal. The school administration does have the power to investigate the situation, but it was handled in a wrongful way that not only violated Savanna's Fourth Amendment right but also embarrassed her. They did not obtain permission from Savanna's parents nor did they contact the police when searching Savanna, violating the Fourth Amendment, and they forced her to strip down to her underwear for a strip search by the nurse. Due to these mistakes in the investigation, the principle should have suffered harsher consequences from the trial.
