The declaration of Independence was and is an extraordinary document both in philosophical and political terms. The declaration of independence gives “every” man the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The declaration was an attempt of principles to help forge national unity.
Even though the declaration of independence set up these god given rights for the Colonists, there was only a very small percentage of them that were actually effected by them in anyway. At this time slavery was still going on, women had very little rights, and men couldn’t vote unless they owned land. The declaration also didn’t do anything in terms of limiting government power; the Articles of Confederation did that. In conclusion, the declaration of independence at this time was only applicable to white land owning men.
