The North American colonies were really becoming their own during the beginning of the 1750's. However, they were still under the rule of the British king that were taxing the Americans in order to make a profit off of them. There were many different taxes like the Stamp Act, Sugar Act, and Townshed Act. The straw on the camel's back however was the Tea Act that put a tax on tea products. This act lead to the Boston Tea Party which ultimately lead to the blockading by the British of the Boston Harbor. No goods could come in or go out and that made the economy drop tremendously. The colonists were getting tired of the back and forth with the motherland and decided it was time that they had their freedom. Thus, the Declaration of Independence was written and signed at the Second Continental Congress. Writing the Declaration of Independence was a big deal because Great Britain could easily retaliate with higher taxes and war. However, our founding fathers has the willpower to send this document and create a memorable time in history.
Thomas Jefferson, the writer of the Declaration really put alot of thought into what he was writing and what he wanted for the future United States of America. He writes how citizens have the right to change government and that the government has to keep the citizens safe, which is still followed today. On the flip side, Jefferson was a bit of a hypocrite and was not thinking about everyone that was located within the colonies. A very famous line that is taken from the Declaration of Independence is "All men are created equal." During this time though, there was still slavery of African Americans. They were not even seen as people and did not get the same rights that a white male would. Jefferson was mainly focusing on white protestant males while he was writing this. The Delcaration had stated that everyone was equle, however, that was not really the case.
