The Declaration of Independence is one of the most controversial pieces of writing to this date. People believe at the time that this piece of writing declared freedom and liberty for every person that was on American soil. However, if you read through the lines, not everybody is receiving the same sorts of freedom. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” They stated that all men are equal and men at the time were separated whether you were an African American or Caucasian. I believe at the time, the Declaration of Independence was truthful because African Americans were not considered men. Not only did African Americans not receive all the joys of freedom, women didn't either. Not once was it stated that women receive freedoms that men who aren't African American receive. If we were to look at this piece of writing presently we would feel that it is essentially a lie. So, my answer is that I believe that the Declaration of Independence was not a lie for it's time but is a lie in some aspects to present date.
