The over all goal of African Americans during the Renaissance is to build on their culture and establish a home in the United States. Up until this point all they knew was the life of a slave and oppression, but finally they had a chance to show who they really were. The Jim Crowe Laws brought a lot of African Americans to the north and once they settled and established a new life in the industrial North, they began to build on their culture. This included musicians such as Louis Armstrong. Even though African American culture was growing rapidly in the North, the South was still heavily against equal rights. Since half the nation was against the freedoms of a group of people it was hard to make any rules to regulate segregation. Also the African Americans were still adjusting to their new lives and freedoms so as far as they were concerned they were just going to take little by little, until they were able to really push for full equality
