The overall goal of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance was to desegregate America. They wanted to be viewed as equals and also tyo be accepted into American culture. They had just been given freedom but they realized that just because they were free, they still had a long way ahead of them. They expressed this through art, music, and literature. In these pieces, they expressed their feelings about being viewed as lower class and most had some positivity in them about how the future would be better and they just had to wait.
The Civil Rights Movement didn't start until the 50's and 60's because in the 20's, they had just settled in the North and West. They were more focused on putting a roof over their head and getting a job and education than their equality. Once they got settled in, they realized that now that they had some stability, they now needed to fight for their rights.
