The major goal throughout the Harlem Renaissance was to create a desegregated country, where both blacks and whites were equal. African-Americans moved to the north and west to search for a way to be happy and successful, hitting the restart button their lives. However, once the African-Americans arrived, they found that their rights compared to whites were being restricted. They began the fight to end Jim Crow Laws, which legalized segregation. Also, Marcus Garvey, a civil rights activist, believed that the only way to achieve equality was to go back to Africa. By promoting this, he diminished any hopes of blacks that thought they could begin change. The Harlem Renaissance was an ongoing movement throughout the 1920s, fighting to end the racism African-Americans faced.
The Civil Rights Movement happened in the 1950-60s because it was hard to push the idea of equality of different races to whites. For example the KKK was back on the rise, and terrorized many once again. Furthermore, more and more people began to change their optimistic attitudes on ending segregation, and wanted to give up. Eventually, a shining light would come and open up the eyes of people to see that change is good, and equality must be given. Until then, blacks had to remain fighting for themselves daily.
