I think the overall goal of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance was to gain racial equality and also to get rid of segregation. Although slavery had just recently been abolished there was still a lot of racial tension and the African Americans during the Renaissance were just expressing themselves and how they felt and also point out that they believe that everyone is equal.
I think the Civil Rights Movement took place when it did because during the 1920's there was still a lot of tension between the races and with the KKK making a rise to power again in the U.S. it was tough enough for African-Americans to deal with that peacefully. Also during the 1920's many people had the same mindset that whites were superior to African-Americans and it took a long time for people to realize that they are wrong and that whites and blacks are equal.
