The goal of African Americans during the Harlem renaissance was to get rid of segregation. It was just about 70 years before when Africans Americans were slaves on plantations. it was in the 1920's when they started to gain hope, and push for equality between all races. It was hard for them though because of activist like Marcus Garvey, who started the back to Africa movement. He believed that blacks will never be equal in America, and that the only was to be respected is to go back to Africa. Also they had to fight the Jim Crow laws which were the laws that practically made segregation equal. the goal was to show people that they are equals, and to end segregation.
It was hard though to pass the message on to the whites because the 1920's is when the Jim Crow laws were first developed, the KKK was starting to gain power again to the US, and there were people like Garvey who had no hope for people coming together. All of these obstacles is the reason why the civil rights movement didn't happen until the 60's. another thing is that it takes time for people to acquire a different view. A transition from blacks being slave to then equals to white in just 70 years is a long shot. Civil right took place in the 60's because of time people started to realize that blacks are equals, but the view wasn't even close to that in the 1920's.
