What was the overarching goal of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance?
The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that spanned the 1920s. The overarching goal of African-Americans during this period was to change how the average African-American viewed. Literature, art, and music challenged the pervading racism and stereotypes and promoted racial and social integration. The creation of art and literature uplifted the race.
Given the changes in African-American culture in the 1920’s, why would the Civil Rights movement not take place until the 1950’s and 60s?
The Great Migration was the movement of African Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West cities. African Americans were just starting to settle in and learning how to function as a "freely" in society. They were more focused on becoming educated and making money to support themselves then being equal. In the 1950s the people were further away from slavery and wanted equality more than the people in the 1920's. The people in the 1920's knew that slavery was worse then equality so they were happy just being free. Young people in the 1950's were gear to fight for equality and they helped fuel the Civil Rights Movement.
