I think the overall goal of African Americans during the Harlem Reinaissance was to show whites that they are not so bad and their culture maybe be different, but not negative. They showed that there are some similarities and some differences, but there is nothing for the whites to be afraid of or hate.
I think it would not take place until 1950's and 1960's because around the 1920's African Americans were satisfied with just being free and having a choice in how they wanted to live their lives. Anything was better than slavery at that time. Then around the late 1930's and mid 1940's WWII had been going on so that distracted the focus of civil rights and treatment of African Americans.
