The overarching goal of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance was to express the African experience through art. By telling the stories of their experiences through music, literature, and art, the African-American community wanted to promote desegregation. Because the experience was being told, the African-Americans were able to be seen as people, rather than slaves. The overall goal of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance was to be heard by other cultures and essentially be accepted into the American culture.
Although there were many changes in the African-American culture in the 1920's, the Civil Rights movement did not take place until the 50's and 60's. This is because the African-Americans just settled into the North. They were used to the harsh conditions in the South and finally left. The people needed to settle in and get use to the new ways of life before fighting for their rights. Usually, people take awhile to realize how unfair conditions may be. The African-Americans must have been use to these conditions and did not realize how horrible they were being treated until a leader stepped up.
