1) The primary goal of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance was to finally be seen as equals to the whites. During the time of the Harlem Renaissance many African-Americans migrated up to northern cities, escaping racism in the south. They used music and writing to try and break the gap between them and the whites, proving they were more than just slaves and labor workers. Especially music like jazz and blues became very popular, and it was during this time where they found some of the best jazz and blues artists of all time. It was a major turn for both blacks and whites living in the same society.
2) The civil rights movement didn't take place until the 1950s and 60s instead of the 1920s because African-Americans were just set free from plantations and that alone was a major step. For most the only life they know is life on the plantations, where they were born and raised. It was until decades later when a new and young generation started to fight for more, motivated to fight for their civil rights.
