The primary goal of the Harlem Renaissance was to build up a community of African-Americans. They wanted to create a realization of the African-American community. The African-Americans wanted to work towards more progressive ideas. During the Harlem Renaissance, the arts became very popular. A lot of singers, writers, jazz artists and blues artists started to thrive in Harlem. The African-American were able to prove that they too had special talents. After the American civil war, the now free, African-Americans began to search for a safe place to explore and create their new identities as free men and women. In the North segregation and discrimination were a lot less brutal and severe. As a result, a lot of the African-Americans began to migrate to Harlem to escape the racism. The Civil Rights Movement didn't take place until the 1950s and 60s instead of the 1920s because they were not sure what to do now that they were free citizens. Many of the African-Americans did not know what to do after they had been set free due to the fact that they had been born and raised on a plantation as a slave. In order for improvements and change to happen, a new generation had to be created and motivated. Many of the younger people began fighting for Civil Rights. They were the catalysts for the rest of the African-American population.
