The goal of African-Americans during the time period of the Harlem Renaissance was to create equality in society. They were trying to become a part of the white society and trying to reduce segregation. The word renaissance means rebirth which was exactly the case. They wanted to start a new beginning with the white society. An example of an effort to decrease segregation was music and Louis Armstrong in particular. He attracted both white and black people with his music which created some positive interaction. The Civil Rights movement only took place until the 1950s because it was impossible to just change how a generation feels instantly. Time was needed for the mindset towards slavery to change. The generation during the 1920s still looked at African-Americans as slaves because that was just the way it was all their lives. A new generation needed to come into place until actual changes were made. The former slaves had also just got out of slavery. They didn't really know anything other than the life of slavery. Before trying to make changes in society, they needed to learn how to live in society and how to live educated lives. They needed to acclimate themselves to a new lifestyle.
