In the second gubernatorial debate between incumbent Chris Christie and Barbara Buono, I thought the most striking issue for me was the budget cuts. Governor Chris Christie came into office in the midst of the financial crisis and was faced with a budget exceeding a two billion dollar revenue shortfall. A hole that both Governor Corzine and budget chairman Barbara Buono created. Governor Chris Christie was faced with a tough decision and cut one billion dollars from education and one billion dollars from home state rebates. Barbara Buono criticized Governor Christie for cutting education and disagreed on his approach to cutting spending. When Buono was faced with the question on what she would do to fill the two billion dollar revenue shortfall she answered saying she would re-instate the tax on the millionaires. Unfortunately, this was a very weak proposition because the millionaires tax was estimated to generate only six hundred million dollars. This number falls well short of the two billion dollars, one that Governor Christie was able to create. Citizens should realize this is the most important issue because it shows that Barbara Buono can not not balance a budget when she was budget chairman under Governor Corzine and it will not change if she becomes Governor as she will continue to spend and spend.
