The Declaration of Independence is the first document acknowledged by the American people, and the British, as governance to live by. Thomas Jefferson wrote, all men are created equal. The most quoted passage in the declaration is "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” Regrettably, in this time period, all men were in fact not created equal, thus failing the american people in its promise to remain in an equal state amongst all men.
So how did this document fail? The Declaration clearly states all men are created equal, however it failed to mention which men. During this time period men of other races were considered to be property, thus not having the ability to have access to these rights. Also women where considered to be under mans rule not giving them any rights either. Nonetheless, these two groups of people, who our founding fathers found fit to ignore, did not gain rights until centuries later.
